If you are a Vogue junkie like we are here at Ecoartweddings.com, then you will have undoubtedly come across the jewelry company Lulu Frost. With a very sustainable approach to creating jewelry pieces of heirloom quality, we have marveled at the beauty of her designs since the company opened it's doors in 2004. Pieces from this line can be pricey, so imagine how delighted we were to see that the new IMAGE section of the L.A. Times featured a DIY from the designer of Lulu Frost, Lisa Saltzer demonstrating how to make your very own bracelet recycled from antique brooch.

It'sncredibly easy!
Now that things are starting to get back to normal here in Malibu, we thought we'd put a little sparkle back into all of our lives with the holiday season fast approaching.
Below are two of my favorite DIY projects that look lovely at a wedding or any holiday event.

These are recycled juice glasses you can find at any thrift store. Use varying sizes to make them unique. While you're at it you can make them as gifts for your guests if you have a managaeable amount ( although a guest list of 150 wouldn't be that difficult with a little Ebay shopping ). Wrap them in scraps of vintage lace or make tea dyed re-useable gift bags that have a "timeworn feel".
First, brush non-toxic water based glue like Mod Podge available in craft stores and sprinkle on tiny glitter ( also available in craft stores ). Finish it off with sparkly trim from a recycled garment and the "piece de resistance" ( use a hot glue gun to attach ), a rhinestone centerpiece from a broken vintage necklace, an earring that lost it's mate ( and sits lonely in your jewelry box ), or a vintage brooch. Compliment your votives by wrapping your napkins in leftover pieces of your vintage jewelry that now has new life as a napkin holder!
While we have been enthusiastic about the impending ( and overdue ) launch of ecoartweddings.com, ecoartevents.com and revolutionmalibu.com, our attention right now is on the Malibu wildfires that is literally stopping us in our tracks.
Our home base is Latigo Canyon ( 2 miles north of Pepperdine University ) and up until now we have escaped mandatory evacuations ( fingers crossed ). We have not been able to go to a grocery store, to work, and run errands because the sherriff's department will not let us back in if we leave the closed off areas of Pacific Coast Highways. In fact, the grocery store where our teenage son works was damaged, as was the Starbucks our college age daughter works. We have stayed on our property, hosing down the roof, running the sprinklers, packing the cars ( and positioning them to leave in a hurry ) and watching the news, which I understand is a luxury given that many Malibu residents don't even have power. While this has been inconvenient and downright scary, I am eternally grateful for our luck....something many others have not had in the last 24 hours. Our prayers are with those who have suffered loss.
Please hang in there with us while we re-organize in this difficult time.
Here is a great idea for an asian themed wedding. Wrap banana leaves ( source them out through organic florists and farmers ) around napkins to secure the chopsticks. Use an exacto knife to make tiny incisions that will hold the chopsticks in place.

Wonder what to do with the leftover chopsticks? if your a crafty gal get some ideas at kwytzakraft.com. They make functional art from recycled chopsticks. Or use this great idea from craftbits.com

Use fabric from your wedding to make this bookmark and have a sentimental reminder every time you turn the page!

Here's a great idea we recently saw in INSTYLE WEDDINGS Fall 2007 issue.
Looking for an heirloom you can pass down? We have alot of of beautiful pieces in our Heirloom line for you to choose from...or pair one of our HEIRLOOMS with yours!
See our beautiful pieces below!

You know the old saying "Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue". Well, we like to believe that in most cases it's better to not have something new...especially when we have beautiful jewelry that has been re-puporsed like the Heirloom charm bracelet above. Re-created from vintage and other jewelry pieces, this is now truly worthy of passing down to the next bride! Each bracelet is one of a kind and can only be duplicated in similar design. This ensures that every ppiece retains it uniqueness. Email us to inquire about themes are also available to give as bridemaids or maid of honor gifts.

I find this a idea brilliant for an evening reception. Grouping these candles gives a vintage feel. Very glamorous too. I spied this idea on green lifestyle guru Danny Seo's blog ( the directions below are directly form Country Home magazine's site where Danny does a monthly column ). Salvation Army and Goodwill are always great places to find mismatched glasses like the ones above.

These elegant candles are a cinch to make. Collect mismatched or chipped thick glassware—a trifle dish, a creamer, wineglasses—and clean them well. Insert a pretabbed candlewick (from a crafts store) in the middle and steady it with two chopsticks. Melt a package of chipped soy wax (Yaley soy chips; $6; joann.com) in a double boiler over low heat. Pour the melted wax into the glass and cool completely at room temperature. Remove the chopsticks, set the table, light, and enjoy. |
How's this for a great D.I.Y. wedding project? This idea is in the fall 2007 issue of Martha Stewart Weddings. It wasn't green enough for us even though this idea does double duty. So we decided to give it our green makeover.
Here's our suggestion for making this idea as eco-friendly as possible:
Buy organic wine. Our suggestion is Mendocinowinesco.com They are incredibly eco-aware and their Parducci winery is now the first carbon neutral winery in the country.
Once you've created your artwork, take it to a copy shop or printer and request recycled paper. If you are using an eco-friendly printer they might have a choice of environmentally friendly inks.
Don't forget to recycle the bottles!
